Old Hickory Lake was formed when the federal government dammed the Cumberland River above Nashville in the early 1950s. Work on the lock and dam began in January 1952 and finished in June 1954, and the Corps of Engineers still operates both today, along with the campgrounds on the shore. The reservoir begins about 25 miles upstream of downtown Nashville and reaches roughly 97 river miles back toward Carthage.
That history shapes daily life at a marina. Old Hickory Dam controls the pool, so the water level is managed rather than left to chance. The lock lets boats travel between the lake and the river below, and on a summer weekend the main channel carries everything from pontoons to cruisers.
Gallatin Marina sits off the main channel of the Cumberland River, in a cove on the Gallatin side of the lake. Five counties border the water: Davidson, Sumner, Wilson, Trousdale and Smith. Our stretch lies in Sumner County, TN, which also takes in Hendersonville, Portland and Westmoreland. Gallatin, Tennessee is the county seat, and the courthouse square is a short drive from the docks.
Ask ten boaters why they come out and you will hear ten answers. Some want a slow cruise and a swim in a quiet cove. Others pull a skier at first light while the water is still flat. Sailors, kayakers and paddle boarders use the lake as well, mostly early and late in the day when the traffic eases.
Old Hickory Lake fishing draws anglers in every season. Largemouth, crappie, catfish and white bass are common targets, and the creek arms and old river channel give fish plenty of structure to hold on. If you fish, ask at the store what has been biting. Our staff are on this water every day and are usually glad to pass on what they have heard.
There are several lakes near Nashville TN, and each has its own character. Old Hickory is the large lake closest to the northeast side of the city, which is a big reason so many families keep a boat here instead of towing every weekend. Around the shoreline you will find 41 public access points and a pair of Corps campgrounds, plus a number of commercial marinas.
Keeping a boat at a marina removes the ramp from your weekend. There is no trailer to hitch, no line at the launch and no hunt for a parking space on a hot Saturday. That convenience is why Gallatin Marina puts covered wet slips, covered racks and jet ports together on one property.
Gallatin Marina was the first property in the Rubright Marinas group, bought by Nate and Jim Rubright in 2017. Since then the docks have been repaired, the electrical and water lines improved, and a lot of attention paid to how the team treats customers. The family judges success by whether people feel safe and leave happy. They welcome feedback and would rather hear about a problem early than late.
If you are new to the area, Gallatin and the lake around it are easy to get to know. Stop in at the store, take a look at the slips, and ask whatever you like. You can also read about our boat storage options before your first visit.
Gallatin itself is one of the older towns in Middle Tennessee, with a historic square, local restaurants and easy access to the lake from several directions. It is easy to make an evening of it: an hour on the water, then dinner in town. It is a good rhythm for a summer weeknight.
